Gary Speed Installed As New Sheffield United Managerby Jack Kitson / 18 August 2010, 09:29Tweet
The Sack Race reported earlier this week that Gary Speed was in pole position to become the Sheffield United Manager and the former Welsh International has now been confirmed in the role, Speed has been named as the successor to Kevin Blackwell who was sacked on Saturday night. Speed is a popular man in Yorkshire from his playing days and he will now be expected to move The Blades back up the Championship and into promotion contention, it will be a tough ask for an inexperienced Manager but he is well respected by the players and could prove an inspired appointment.
Speed has been one of the great Premier League players over the last 20 years and it will be interesting to see how he fares on his first steps into management, he has long been groomed at Bramall Lane to take over the hot seat when Blackwell decided to move on or was sacked as the case was last weekend. The Blades have lost their first two games of the season with the style of football under Blackwell often criticised by the United fans, Speed will need to start wracking up the points as soon as possible as well as trying to appease the fans with some attractive football.
Speed has been appointed on a three-year-contract at Bramall Lane so he should have a good amount of time to stamp his mark on the squad, with the ultimate goal of taking the Blades back to the Premier League in the near future as Neil Warnock did a few years ago.
