Hughes Under Pressure at City as Hiddink Loitersby Mark Cohen / 18 December 2009, 10:53Tweet
Mark Hughes is today the subject of intense speculation that his reign as Man City boss is nearing an end, several outlets are reporting that Sparky could be on his bike any day now and that former Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has already been approached to take over at Eastlands. City have been struggling in recent weeks with the team becoming draw specialists which has seen them slip of the battle for a Champions League spot, things got worse for Hughes and City on Wednesday night when the team were brushed aside 3-0 by Spurs at White Hart Lane.
The manner of the display against Spurs is bound to have worried the owners of the club as they are expecting results having spent an astronomical amount of money in the summer, Hughes spent in excess of £100million on all sorts of players who were expected to lead them to a top four place. The Manager will know all too well that if results do not start to pick up then he could be off down the job centre looking for a way back into football, he cannot afford another performance like the Spurs one against Sunderland at the weekend if he wants to see the New Year in at City. The bookmakers have picked up on the unrest at City with Paddy Powerslashing his odds in the Next Premier League Manager to be Sacked Odds, Hughes is now as short as 1/2 odds on to be the next Manager for the high jump.
As for potential replacements if Hughes does indeed go then it appears that Hiddink is the ideal candidate, the former Chelsea man is in limbo currently after Russia failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup meaning that Guus is looking for a new job. He does has Premier League experience but there are some doubts at this stage as to whether he would want to go back into full-time club management at this stage of his career, one man who the Sack Race believes could be on the shortlist is Roberto Mancini. The former Inter Milan boss has made no secret of his desire to coach in England and is likely to jump at the chance of going to City should he be given the chance, Mancini is a young Manager and a big name which could fit the bill for the ambitious owners of Man City.
