Gary Johnson Leaves Bristol City By Mutual Consent

Steve Claridge by Steve Claridge / 18 March 2010, 10:39

Gary Johnson has left Bristol City by mutual consent after almost five years in charge of the Aston Gate club, City have struggled this season with the team languishing in mid-table and struggling to build on success from previous years. Johnson has had a successful spell at Bristol City having led them to promotion from League One and then taking the club to within 90 minutes of the Premier League in 2008 when they lost to Hull City in the play-off final but all concerned have decided it is time for a change. Things have steadily going down hill since that play-off final defeat with the club struggling to progress towards their Premier League target and the board at City have decided to act now to halt the decline.

IT seems to be a very amicable split with Johnson releasing a statement thanking everyone at the club and he will no doubt be back in football pretty soon having built himself a good reputation at Ashton Gate over the past five years. Assistant Manager Keith Millen will take charge of first team affairs for the time being while attention turns to finding a successor in the long term for Bristol City, the immediate future will see the club trying to push themselves up the table over the last couple of months of the season. Any new Manager will need to have the Premier League in mind and will be expected to make some progress into the top half of the table next season before mounting a promotion assault.

At this stage there is no betting for the Next Bristol City Manager but it is sure to be a job that will be of interest to some top Managers looking to take a club to the Premier League. Some names that are being banded around at this early stage include Gareth Southgate who did a decent job under tough conditions at Middlesbrough before getting sacked and Steve Coppell who guided Reading out of the Championship which will appeal to Bristol City fans. It will be interesting to see who the fans want as they look to move to a new stadium and hopefully a brighter future with Premier League the aim for a club with big support.
