How many Premier League managers will leave during the 2014/15 Premier League season?by Jack Kitson / 01 August 2014, 10:22Tweet
The 2014/15 Premier League campaign is still over two weeks away but already we have seen some frenzied action in the Sack Race, with Sam Allardyce’s odds slashed from 8/1 down to just 8/11 last Sunday. The West Ham gaffer came under-fire on numerous occasions last season, and is now already feeling the heat ahead of the eagerly anticipated 2014/15 crusade.
Remarkably Big Sam wasn’t one of the eye-watering 13 managers who left their posts last season, which was the second highest tally in the Premier League era, with the unprecedented 1994/95 campaign still holding the record with a staggering 15 changes.
To get you in the mood for the dawn of the new season Betfair have opened up a market focusing on how many top-flight managers will bite the dust, which is split into three categories. See below for details.
7 or less @ 11/8
Eight of the first 12 Premier League seasons featured 7 or less managerial changes, however since 2004/05 there have remarkably been at least eight casualties a campaign. The 1995/96 season remains the sparsest with only three gaffers clearing their desks, and it is safe to say that slim figure will never be lowered, unless some sort of rules and regulations are put in place.
8 to 10 @ 6/4
This category is perhaps the most likely outcome considering that an average of eight managers per season have departed since the league's inauguration in 1992. 10 of the 22 campaigns have witnessed between 8 and 10 clubs change boss, including seven of the last 10 terms.
11 or more @ 7/4
In the first 15 Premier League campaigns only the blood-bath 1994/95 season featured 11 or more managerial changes. However, in recent years there have been an epidemic of sackings as tetchy chairman of the modern era become increasingly ruthless after one or two poor results. Three of the last seven campaigns have containing over 11 dismissals, while the other four seasons have all featured at least eight apiece.
