Thomas Tuchel in shock Saints linkby Jack Kitson / 01 June 2017, 15:28Tweet
Thomas Tuchel was always going to be linked with a host of clubs after losing his job at Borussia Dortmund two days ago, however even the most optimistic of Southampton supporters wouldn't have envisioned their team being in the race for his signature.
However, that is currently the case, well according to the betting at least, with Tuchel steaming into the mix at 4/1, behind frontrunner Garry Monk who is the 2/1 favourite to replace under-fire Saints boss Claude Puel. Meanwhile, Marco Silva is now out of the running after trading Hull for Watford.
Despite leading Southampton to the EFL Cup final and an 8th place finish Puel's position is under severe threat after one year at the helm, with many fans frustrated with the club's negative style of play and lack of goals under the Frenchman.
Puel has just jetted off on holiday while the club conduct a review of the season led by Les Reed, but he could find himself thrown into in the Job Centre when he comes back.
If Saints decide to axe Puel then could Tuchel dart over in the other direction?
On the outside a shock switch appears unlikely, but you simply can't rule it out.
It would undoubtedly be an ambitious swoop from the Saints, but if they could lure Tuchel over to St Mary's they are likely to boost their chances of avoiding yet another mass summer exodus, while attracting over some top quality players for themselves.
The popular German is currently the favourite for the Arsenal job, but a move to the Emirates is on hold for at least two years after Arsene Wenger signed a new deal with the Gunners.
Meanwhile, the Barcelona post has been taken by Ernesto Valverde, although a move to Serie A with Roma or Inter Milan could be on the cards.
