Dave Jones Early Favourite To Replace Gary Megson At Sheffield Wednesdayby Jack Kitson / 01 March 2012, 10:06Tweet
Dave Jones has emerged as the hot favourite in the Next Sheffield Wednesday Manager betting market following the surprise sacking of Gary Megson with just 13 games remaining. The Owls have become the second high-flying League One club to dispense of their manager in just two weeks - after the shock departure of Lee Clark from Huddersfield Town - and the fans will now be demanding answers from chairman Milan Mandaric. It seems both a bizarre and rash decision at this late stage in the season especially considering that the club are third in League One and on Sunday they earned a priceless win against their fierce local rivals and fellow promotion hopefuls Sheffield United in the Steel City derby.
Megson was appointed manager of The Owls just over a year ago and guided them to a 15th place finish last season. As expected the club pushed on this campaign and have been in the top four since October, however, four consecutive defeats prior to the win against Sheff Utd was ultimately Megson’s downfall. Attention will now turn to his replacement with the former Cardiff City boss Dave Jones the early frontrunner. Jones was recently linked with the vacancies at Huddersfield and Leeds but remains out of work but reportedly eager for a return to the game. Other contenders at this stage include Mick McCarthy and Lee Clark who in February were sacked by Wolves and Huddersfield respectively. Paul Ince is also in the frame as is Nigel Worthington.
Next up for Wednesday is a trip to relegation strugglers Rochdale on Saturday in a match they must win to close the gap on the automatic promotion places. Wednesday are the 6/5 favourites with Stan James for the win, while Rochdale have been priced at 9/4, with a draw available at 11/5.
