Rafa Benitez On Brink Of Sack At Inter Milan Despite World Club Success

Steve Claridge by Steve Claridge / 20 December 2010, 09:58

Inter Milan are understood to be on the verge of sacking Rafa Benitez as Manager in the wake of an astonishing outburst following the team's success in the World Club Championship over the weekend, the former Liverpool Manager was already under pressure with the team struggling in Serie A and his time in Italy now appears to be up. The Spaniard has issued the club with an ultimatum with Benitez desperate to add new players to the squad in January otherwise the club will continue to struggle, the alternative is to get rid of him and it appears that the Back Me or Sack Me message to Massimo Moratti has backfired with the Inter President choosing the latter.

Benitez inherited a squad from Jose Mourinho that won the Treble last year with the Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cups all safely tucked up in the trophy cabinet at the San Siro, however he has failed to match the efforts so far of old foe Mourinho and he could be set to pay the ultimate price. At the moment Inter lie 13 points behind rivals AC Milan who top Serie A and that is simply not good enough for a team like Inter, they have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League but only in second place after they went down to Spurs in the group stages at White Hart Lane. The season of Inter will be very familiar to Liverpool fans who endured a very similar campaign last season under Benitez, with the team slipping out of contention in the League at an early stage while struggling in Europe and that ultimately ended in the demise of the Spaniard.

This all comes after Benitez led inter to the World Club Championships over the weekend, it was the 5th trophy of a stunning year for Inter but in truth it is little more than a cakewalk for the European teams who send a strong team and it looks like not being enough for Benitez at the San Siro. The main contender for the job at Inter if and when Rafa is given the boot is Luciano Spalletti who has had success in Russia with Zenit St Petersburg recently, the Italian led the team to the Russian Title and he would no doubt jump at the chance to return home to manage a team like Inter. It looks like being an interesting couple of weeks at the San Siro as Rafa Benitez continues to fight the downturn in his career, it was always going to be a thankless task taking over from Mourinho and at the moment Benitez is struggling in the shadow of the Special One.
