Richie Barker Favourite In Next Bury Manager Bettingby Richard Smith / 20 May 2011, 09:47Tweet
Richie Barker is the leading candidate to take over at Bury, with a final decision to be made in the next few days. The newly promoted club have been managerless since former boss Alan Knill left for Scunthorpe United at the end of March, with Barker leaving his position as youth team manager to take charge as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. The 35-year-old impressed in his eight game stint as manager, leading the club to promotion to League One by taking a hugely impressive 19 points from a possible 24, and as a result is the clear favourite to take the job on a permanent basis.
Barker, a former Macclesfield, Rotherham and Mansfield striker, arrived at Gigg Lane in July 2010 as youth team manager. Just eight months later, after Alan Knill had left for Championship side Scunthorpe, Barker was thrown in at the deep end and tasked with leading the club to promotion. Barker took to his new role as caretaker boss of the first team like a duck to water as he lead the Shakers to six consecutive victories and promotion to League One, which was confirmed after a pulsating 3-2 victory away to the eventual League Two Champions Chesterfield. His exploits were also noticed on a larger scale as he was named Football League Two Manager of the Month for April his very first month in football management.
Sky Bet have Barker at evens to clinch the vacancy whilst Steve Eyre is second in the running at 3/1. The former Charlton manager Iain Dowie, the recently retired Gary Neville and the Perth Glory striker Robbie Fowler are all in the running at 10/1.
