Southampton eye up Marco Silvaby Jack Kitson / 23 January 2018, 16:15Tweet
If the unemployed Marco Silva is bidding to bounce back from his Watford sacking then he may not have to wait long until another Premier League vacancy becomes available.
The Sun is reporting that struggling Southampton have targeted Silva as their next manager, with the club’s current incumbent, Mauricio Pellegrino, on the verge of losing his job at St Mary’s.
The Saints claimed a prized point at home to Tottenham last weekend, but results elsewhere meant they ended the 24th wave of top-flight fixtures in the dreaded drop zone, one point adrift of safety with 14 matches remaining.
The Hampshire outfit may have frustrated former boss Mauricio Pochettino, but there’s no getting away from the stark reality that it’s now 11 games stretching nearly nine weeks since they last tasted victory in the Premier League - with the 4-1 win over (then managerless) Everton their only win in their last 15 matches.
Pellegrino, the favourite for the sack, will seek respite at home to Silva’s former club Watford on Saturday, when the teams clash in the fourth round of the FA Cup. However, should the Argentine lose to Javi Gracia’s Hornets in front of the St Mary’s faithful, then he could well be ejected from his hot seat before the weekend’s out.
Should this outcome occur, could the Saints then swoop in for Silva?
Silva was briefly linked with a switch to Southampton in the early days of last summer, but with Claude Puel still at the helm, he was instead lured over to Watford.
The Portuguese coach may understandably be wounded by Watford’s decision to send him to the guillotine, however a swift return to the dugout would no doubt be popular among many Saints supporters.
Although there is the possibility that Silva could end the season with three relegations to his name in just 18 months of English football. He took Hull down last season, Watford are by no means safe this term, while his potential next club Southampton are currently down in 18th...an unlikely outcome but you never know…
#saintsfc didn't get Silva last time round due to spending too much time thinking about sacking Puel. Likely same thing will happen again. Personally I'd go all out to get him. The squad we have is top 10, just needs a decent manager to get them playing.— Sam Nickerson (@samnickerson) January 21, 2018
