Jose Riga on the brink of Blackpool exitby Jack Kitson / 24 July 2014, 09:15Tweet
Blackpool's well documented pre-season problems could be set to plummet to a new low, with their manager Jose Riga reportedly on the brink of quitting Bloomfield Road. The former Charlton boss only took charge of the Tangerines six weeks ago, but he is understood to be evaluating his position at the helm following a series of heated disagreements with the club’s under-fire chairman Karl Oyster over potential transfer targets.
The Championship club remarkably only have nine registered players on the books, and were forced to field five trialists during last weekend's 4-0 victory against Northern Football League Division One side Penrith. Riga is understandably desperate to bring in new recruits as his side’s opening fixture away to Nottingham Forest on August 9 is rapidly approaching, however whether the 56-year-old will still be in charge by then remains to be seen.
Seasiders supporters have been left in the dark as Riga simply refuses to speak to the media. Fans will no doubt be fearing the worse having watched in horror as their beloved club have blitzed through seven managers in less than two years, including the preposterous 65 day reign of Michael Appleton during the 2012/13 season. Blackpool’s shambolic situation has unsurprisingly seen all bookmakers install the club as the odds-on favourites for the dreaded drop, while they can be backed at 11/10 with Sky Bet to stay up.
