Andre Villas Boas takes a tumble in Premier League Sack Raceby Jack Kitson / 25 November 2013, 10:17Tweet
Tottenham's disastrous 6-0 defeat at Manchester City could have grave effects on Andre Villas-Boas’ future at White Hart Lane after his odds were slashed from an outside 40/1 to just 8/1, making him the second favourite in the Premier League Sack Race behind the struggling Fulham gaffer Martin Jol.
Spurs headed in to the match with the best defence in the league, having conceded just six goals in their previous 11 games. However, that number was doubled after a woeful 90 minutes in Manchester, which now leaves AVB's men 9th in the table and eight points adrift of league leaders and fierce rivals Arsenal.
It was the first time that Spurs, who are without a win since beating Hull in October, had suffered back-to-back league defeats since March. Worryingly goals have been a major problem for the North London side who have now failed to find the back of the net in three consecutive games. Only the bottom two - Crystal Palace and Sunderland - have scored less, while Man City have already scored 25 more.
AVB has been criticised for failing to get the best out of his expensive new signings. The Portuguese coach splashed out a staggering £107 million during the summer but supporters have yet to witness anything special from the likes of Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado, who both appear to be struggling to adjust to England’s top-flight.
The fixtures don’t get any easier with defending champions Man Utd next on the cards. The Red Devils are currently enjoying a decent run of 10 games without defeat in all competitions and remarkably haven’t lost at Tottenham in 12 matches, a run dating back to 2001. Should the hosts lose once again to David Moyes’ men then it will push AVB even closer to the exit door, with Roberto Mancini, Michael Laudrup and Jurgen Klinsmann all waiting in the wings in the Next Tottenham Manager Market.
