Roberto Di Matteo Favourite To Be Named August's Manager of the Month

The dawn of the 2012/13 Premier League season is drawing closer and closer, with all 20 teams currently engaged in pre-season training. Managers will be working out their preferred starting 11, while looking to lure in one or two more players in order to bolster their squad. A perfect start to the campaign is obviously a huge boost, whether a team is vying for the title, battling it out for a top four finish or fighting for safety.

Stan James have installed Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo as the early 8/1 favourite to get off to a flyer and land the Manager of the Month award for August. The Blues kick-off their campaign on the 19th, before hosting Reading on the 22nd and then Newcastle three days later. Chelsea enjoyed a stunning end to the previous season and they will be expected to collect six points from their first two matches, however Newcastle at Stamford Bridge will be a difficult test, with the Magpies memorably winning 2-0 in the previous meeting, courtesy of two Papiss Cisse wonder goals.

New Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert can be backed at 10/1 to claim the accolade. Villa head into the new campaign on the back of two poor seasons and will be looking for a fresh start under the former Norwich City boss. The Midlands club begin with a trip to newly promoted West Ham, followed by a match at home to Everton. Lambert will be particularly focused on turning Villa Park into a fortress following some dismal displays in front of supporters last season.

Defending champions Manchester City won their first Premier League crown in spectacular fashion and after experiencing the unparalleled highs of winning the title they will be doubly eager to do it again. As always there are a plethora of rumours flying around the Etihad Stadium, with the futures of Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko in the air, and reports linking Robin van Persie to the club. Roberto Mancini (10/1) recently signed a new contract and will be looking for his side to make the perfect start against Premier League new boys Southampton on August 19th, with a tricky encounter away to Liverpool following on the 26th.

New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has also been handed odds of 10/1 as he aims to get off to a winning start to his reign with a win away to West Brom, with former Reds coach Steve Clarke taking charge of his first game for the Baggies. Liverpool then welcome City to Anfield in what is sure to be a fiery fixture.

Elsewhere Everton’s David Moyes is available at 11/1, with Sir Alex Ferguson and Andre Villas-Boas priced at 12/1. Fergie has won the Manager of the Month award a record 26 times and will be looking to take six points from United’s August matches against Everton and Fulham as he aims to wrestle back the title from neighbours City.
