Pressure Mounts On Kenny Dalglishby Jack Kitson / 26 March 2012, 10:20Tweet
The pressure is mounting on Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish following a dismal run of five defeats from the club’s last six league games. Liverpool suffered a shock home defeat to Wigan on Saturday, which came just days after their miserable collapse away to QPR. Their poor run leaves them 13 points outside of the top four and a staggering 28 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, which is simply not good enough for a club eager to return to the summit of English football. Their hopes of a fourth place Champions League spot are now effectively over and with eight matches remaining The Reds are now in real danger of finishing outside of the top 10 for the first time in Premier League history.
Dalglish has had his odds slashed from 25/1 to as low as 9/2 in the Next Premier League Manager To Be Sacked betting market. The Scotsman has splashed out £115m since his return to the dugout and despite spending heavily on offensive players goals have been a big problem for the club this season, having scored less than the likes of Blackburn, Fulham and Norwich. Dalglish has blamed fatigue for the club’s recent slump but he knows that tiredness is no excuse at this level. Football is a results driven business and Liverpool’s domestic cup success has masked what has otherwise been another disappointing season in the league.
Liverpool are next in action Sunday when they travel up to 6th placedNewcastle, who are eight points above them in the league. However, Paddy Power have installed Liverpool as the 5/4 favourites to come away with the win, while Newcastle are priced at 15/8 for the three points, with a draw available at 11/5.
