Jose Mourinho equals League Cup record and there could be more to come.by Simon Lillicrap / 27 February 2017, 14:21Tweet
Jose Mourinho became the first Man United manager to win a trophy in his first season as he recorded his fourth league cup win, a joint record alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough.
Mourinho has certainly become a League Cup specialist winning the trophy three times with Chelsea before his move up north. The Portuguese man is a trophy winning manager. Where he goes, success (even if it be for a short period) will follow.
Manchester United are realistically out of the title race but are still fighting for the Europa League, in which they have a favourable tie against FC Rostov and also the FA Cup. Mourinho’s debut season could end with three trophies and a spot in next year’s Champions League.
That would certainly mark a successful season and justify some of the huge money they have spent, slowly but surely Mourinho is implying his blueprint onto his side. They should be serious title challengers next season and with the possibility of Champions League football they could attract the better players. Antoine Griezmann is rumoured to be one of Mourinho’s targets and although Ibrahimovi'c is performing spectacularly now, the time will come where they must replace him.
A lot rests on the business end of the season. Man United are on a staggering run of form with just one defeat in their last 26 games in all competitions. If they keep that form up they will be heading for success. That’s the thing about Mourinho, he transforms good sides into winners. They were not at the races on Sunday and should have gone a goal down early on but his side left with the trophy, and that is what will go down in history.
He implements a winning mentality, a mentality whereby losing is not an option. They face a key clash away at Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter final which will truly test this mentality and is the game that could define their season. Win and they will be favourites for another trophy, lose and their season could turn into a disappointment. Realistically they could finish sixth and be knocked out of the Europa League and FA Cup.
That would leave Mourinho having done WORSE than his predecessor Louis Van Gaal in his final season in charge. LVG won a more prestigious trophy, the FA Cup and finished fifth. However, it is unlikely that United’s season will just tail off given the run of form that they are on. It will be a difficult tie against Chelsea but if they can come through that they have a real chance of winning three trophies this season.
What a return to English football that would spell for Jose Mourinho.
