Nigel Clough hot favourite to return to Nottingham Forest following approachby Jack Kitson / 27 January 2017, 09:17Tweet
Nigel Clough is now the odds-on favourite to trade Burton Albion for Nottingham Forest after the latter made an official approach on Thursday night.
Clough, a former Reds player (300+ appearances), has been linked with the club ever since Philippe Montanier was sacked a fortnight ago, however throughout this time frame he had been hovering around the 10/1 mark, outside of the cluster of favourites.
But now the 50-year-old is the outright frontrunner to return to Forest as a player, and of course follow in his father’s footsteps (Brian Clough), with talks today (Friday) set to take place with Burton chairman Ben Robinson.
The emotional pull of managing Forest will no doubt be very strong, but whether Clough will be willing to work under Forest’s trigger-happy owner, Fawaz Al-Hasawi, is unknown.
Meanwhile, Clough obviously has an extremely strong bond with current club Burton, who are battling it out with Forest in the fight for Championship survival, meaning it would be a very bold move to switch jobs at such a pivotal point in the season.
In his first spell at Burton (1998 - 2009) Clough led the club up from the Southern Premier League to the summit of the Conference - the club went on to win an historic promotion up to the Football League - before leaving for Derby.
Clough went on to manage Sheffield United, only to return to the Brewers in December 2015, and within six months he’d steered the club up into the Championship for the first time in their history.
