Crawley's Richie Barker surprise early favourite for Portsmouth jobby Jack Kitson / 27 November 2013, 10:03Tweet
Richie Barker has emerged as the surprise early favourite to succeed Guy Whittingham at managerless Portsmouth. The south coast side terminated Whittingham's contract on Monday following a four game losing streak, leaving the League Two side 18th in the table. Then, on Tuesday, they suffered their fifth consecutive defeat after losing late-on at home to Southend under caretaker boss Andy Awford.
Barker is currently in charge of League One outfit Crawley Town, meaning he would have to move down a tier if he was to join Pompey. The 38-year-old, who lives in Hove, has been in charge of the Reds since August 2012, with the club finishing 10th last season. He was linked with the Sheffield United job a short while ago, but can now be found as the odds-on favourite with Sky Bet and Bet Victor for the Pompey vacancy.
His current position means that it could be worth looking elsewhere in the Next Portsmouth Manager Market. The out-of-work Martin Allen, who is desperate to get back in the dugout, is definitely worth considering at 4/1 with BetVictor.
Former Pompey player Allen was recently sacked by League One side Gillingham despite memorably leading them to the fourth-tier title last season. Other names in the running include Neil Warnock, Mikey Harris and David Connolly.
