Stuart Pearce odds-on favourite in Great Britain Football Manager Olympics Betting

Stuart Pearce is the odds-on favourite to be named as the manager of the 2012 Great Britain Olympic football team. Sky Bet have the England Under-21s manager as the 4/5 favourite to take charge of the team consisting of players under the age of 23 from the four home nations; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British Olympic Association are due to name the manager in approximately four to six weeks.

After years of speculation the BOA recently announced that GB will have a football team at the Olympics in London next summer. The last time GB competed in the Olympics was over 50 years ago in 1960, when the men's side failed to progress from their group consisting of Italy, Brazil and China. It is not yet known whether all the home nations will compete in the ‘united' team as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are reportedly opposed to the move and have reacted angrily to claims that their players could take part in the team. The BOA obviously want the best squad possible to compete at the Olympics but this reaction could jeopardise the involvement of the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey. The FA have already decided no England players will go to both Euro 2012 and the Olympics.

Pearce is viewed by many as the ideal candidate to manage the GB team. His experience of working with and nurturing the development of young players at U-21 level gives him the edge over the other front runners. Pearce is currently managing England Under-21s who were recently sent home early from the European Championships in Denmark, after picking up just two points from their three group games. However, his managerial reputation has been enhanced since taking over the team in 2007 after strong showings in the last two European Championships. Pearce also has experience of managing in the Premier League having been in charge of Manchester City from 2005 to 2007.

Former England international David Beckham can be found with odds of 5/1 in what would be a surprise appointment. The FA's head of elite development Gareth Southgate is also priced at 5/1, with the likes of Ray Wilkins at 8/1 and Martin O'Neill at 12/1 also linked to the position.
