Sacked Richie Barker moves a step closer to Portsmouth appointmentby Jack Kitson / 28 November 2013, 12:23Tweet
Richie Barker looks like he is on his way to Portsmouth after losing his job at Crawley Town. On Monday Barker emerged as the favourite for the Pompey vacancy following the sacking of Guy Whittingham, but with growing speculation linking him with Fratton Park Crawley decided to send him packing on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils were without a win in seven League One games - and had only scored one goal in that period - leaving them 12th in the table, and the same distance (six points) adrift of the play-offs as they are from the relegation zone. Barker's last game at the helm was Tuesday’s goalless draw with Swindon, with chief scout Martin Hinshelwood and striker Gary Alexander placed in interim charge.
Barker’s sacking will only intensify rumours that he will now look to make an instant return to the dugout with League Two side Portsmouth. The 38-year-old can currently be found at just 1/3 with Sky Bet in the Next Portsmouth Manager Market, while Martin Allen, Chris Wilder and Just Edinburgh are all further back at the 10/1 mark.
