Former Everton caretaker David Unsworth a contender for Oxford job

A week has flown by since Oxford dispensed of boss Pep Clotet, during which former manager Michael Appleton has ruled out a return to the Kassam Stadium, while the hotly linked Frank Lampard has denied holding talks with the League One club.

Rookie boss Lampard does however remain the frontrunner for the post, although an appointment is appearing increasingly unlikely as the days roll on.

U’s caretaker gaffer Derek Fazackerley is still in the frame at 6/1 as are the likes of League One promotion specialist Simon Grayson, and Hibernian’s Neil Lennon, while former Forest gaffer Mark Warburton is now out at 20/1.

The latest name to burst into the frame is David Unsworth, who last Autumn took caretaker charge of Everton for eight matches following the sacking of Ronald Koeman, who is currently being with the Netherlands.

Despite declaring his interest in the permanent position, results didn’t go Unsworth's way¬†(W2 D1 L5), and in the end he made way for the incoming Sam Allardyce.

Unsworth has since gone back to his role with Everton’s U23 side, but after getting a taste of life in the managerial arena, he could now be keen to take up his first management position in the Football League.

The 44-year-old has entered into the Next Oxford Manager Market at 4/1, making him the second favourite to replace Clotet.

Over the weekend Oxford, whose game with leaders Wigan was postponed, dropped to 12th in League One, meaning the club are now closer in points (eight) to the drop zone than the play-offs (nine).

The club travel to Karl Robinson’s Charlton 7th) on Saturday looking to avoid four consecutive defeats in all competitions for the second time in three months.
