Patrick Vieira bursts into contention for the Newcastle post

Patrick Vieira has emerged as a surprise contender to take charge of Newcastle United. The Frenchman, who has made no secret of his desire to forge a managerial career of his own, was a 33/1 long shot on Thursday, however today (Friday) his odds have been slashed to as low as 8/1 with Sky Bet, behind the bookmakers favourite Steve McClaren, and John Carver.
Vieira's contract at Manchester City expires in June, and rumours are rife that the 38-year-old is keen to embark on a life in the chaotic managerial arena. The former Arsenal midfielder has been working as City's Elite Development Squad coach, where he has thrived in a role developing the club's next generation of stars. Earlier in May Vieira led his U-21 troops to victory in the International Premier League Cup following a 1-0 victory over Porto in the Final.
Vieira has been linked with a return to his homeland with southern France side Marseille, who are reportedly set to lose boss Marcelo Bielsas in the summer, with the 59-year-old linked with a move to managerless West Ham. Vieira has also been touted as a future Citizens boss, although he is unlikely to be promoted into the hot seat anytime soon. Meanwhile, a move up to the north east with Newcastle would no doubt one of the more interesting stories of the summer, and one that could gather steam in the upcoming weeks.
