Crawley Town target John Gregoryby Jack Kitson / 02 December 2013, 11:16Tweet
John Gregory could be set for a surprise return to the dugout with League One side Crawley Town after it emerged that the two parties are locked in advanced talks. The former Aston Villa boss was has been out-of-work for two years but if negotiations with the Reds Devils are successful then he will be appointed as Richie Barker's successor at Broadfield.
Crawley sacked Barker last week following a run of seven league games without a win. The 38-year-old had also been heavily linked with the Portsmouth vacancy, which no doubt had an impact on his exit. Chief scout Martin Hinshelwood and striker Gary Alexander were placed in caretaker charge of the Reds for their 1-0 defeat at Crewe on Saturday, which left the club in 14th and in desperate need of some inspiration.
That is now likely to come in the form of Gregory who was the overwhelming odds-on favourite on Monday morning before bookmakers suspended the Next Crawley Town Manager Market. The 59-year-old was last seen in English football six years ago with QPR back, and was most recently in charge of Kazakhstan Premier League side FC Kairat in 2011. If, as expected, Gregory is appointed then his first game in charge will be away to Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
