Could Paul Ince return to management with Oxford?

Frank Lampard, Michael Appleton, Derek Fazackerley and even David Unsworth have all been linked with the Oxford United vacancy so far, but today (Tuesday) it’s the turn of Paul Ince.

Ince, currently a pundit on BT Sport, has stormed his way into the Next Oxford Manager Market at 2/1.

The Yellows have been searching for a new manager for just over a week following their decision to axe Pep Clotet after a shock defeat to Bury.

The club have given no clue as to who their prefered replacement is. All we know so far is that former gaffer Appleton will not return, while there have been no talks with Lampard, although this has done nothing to prevent a flurry of rumours linking the Chelsea legend with the job.

Whether Oxford fans will be inspired by the abrupt appearance of Ince is open to debate. His presence in the top echelons of the betting is certainly a strange one, and perhaps reflects the enigma surrounding the club’s next move in the manager market.

The former England and Man Utd midfielder has not been seen in the dugout for a whopping four years, while all six of his spells in management have lasted 56 games or less.

Ince began his managerial career with Macclesfield in 2006, preserving the club’s Football League status before venturing off to MK Dons. Here Ince enjoyed his best period in management, leading the club to the League Two title and the EFL Trophy, which caught the eye of (then) top-flight BLackburn.

Ince’s move to Rovers saw him become the first black British boss to manage in the Premier League, but it was short-lived as he was sent packing just 21 games into the 2008/09 season.

It’s not gone too well for Ince since, following a return to MK Dons for a second spell, and brief stints at Notts County and Blackpool.

On the face of it a return to the dugout with Oxford does appear unlikely, but should the rumours gather momentum then you never know, although judging by the results of our poll so far (see below), it wouldn’t be an overly popular appointment.

Lampard remains the favourite in the betting, ahead of Ince, Unsworth and Fazackerley, while Simon Grayson is worth a look at 12/1.
