Steve Coppell New Favourite To Take Bristol City Job

Mick Bates by Mick Bates / 30 March 2010, 08:14

The speculation surrounding the Next Bristol City Manager is continuing to be rife with Steve Coppell now the new favourite to take the hot seat at Ashton Gate, City have been looking for a new gaffer since they parted company with Gary Johnson on the 18th March but at this stage there is no end in sight for the saga. The Chairman of the club has announced that no decision on the next Manager will be made before 17th April with caretaker Keith Millen remaining in charge for the time being as he looks to take the club into the top half of the table.

The Sack Race understands that Millen could well put himself into pole position for the job if he can take the team on a good run over the next few games, at this stage though it is Coppell who is the bookies favourite and he is currently odds-on to take the job on a full time basis. Victor Chandlerhave been following developments at Ashton Gate very closely and they are convinced that Coppell is the man to take the job after a while out of the game. Coppell had a successful spell at Reading which included a stint in the Premier league and Bristol City would love to have a man of that experience to take them to the next level.

Bristol City are an ambitious team with a new stadium on the way and the Premier League has to be their long term aim, they have spent the last few seasons in and around the top half of the table but they have been unable to quite make that leap to the Premier League. Gary Johnson led them to the Play-Off Final in 2008 when they lost out to Hull in the tightest of games, things started to go down hill following that defeat which eventually led to the downfall of Johnson. Aside from Coppell and Millen there are still some other big names in the frame for the Ashton Gate hot seat, Tony Mowbray is now out of work after leaving Celtic and may want to get straight back into the game. Mowbray has had a tough time at Celtic but knows how to take a team to the Premier League having done it with West Brom which could prove invaluable experience at a club like City.
