Ian Holloway: If Pogba is worth £175m, buying Harry Maguire is a snipby Ian Holloway / 31 July 2019, 13:39Tweet
Manchester United's defensive woes took another negative turn with the news Eric Bailly is out for four or five months with a knee injury, and The Sack Race's columnist Ian Holloway believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must now act quickly in the transfer market, and he believes the Red Devils boss must target Leicester City and England defender Harry Maguire, who is linked with a move to Old Trafford.
“I would pay an awful lot of money for someone like him if I was Manchester United.
“If I was trying to build a football team at United, I would look at the centre half pairings there currently, and I’d say they were pretty shocking compared to the ones that were very successful for them in the past.
“It’s alright having a world class goalkeeper that you’ve had to keep by paying him a lot of money. I would be saying to the club ‘Go and get me Harry Maguire’.
“I don’t care how much you’d have to pay for him. Buy him and that’s your left centre-half sorted and then maybe Alderweireld can go there as well, because not one pairing at Manchester United has done any good since Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left.
“I’m not being rude, that’s my opinion. [Chris] Smalling and [Phil] Jones haven’t worked, Bailly and [Victor] Lindelof were bought by Mourinho, good god that hasn’t worked has it?
“Bailly’s now just got injured, so for me the club’s success has been built on a brilliant goalkeeper and two fantastic centre-halfs. Where are they? I don’t see them.
“Look what Liverpool have done with £75 million, they’ve bought ‘Mr Majestic’ who has turned them into serious title contenders.
“They nearly did it last year, they may be up again for it this year.
“All I’m saying about Harry Maguire is that it’s a snip. If Pogba is worth £175 million in their valuation, then please rush down the shop and buy me Harry Maguire.”
