Martin O'Neill Favourite To Replace Sacked Dave Jones At Cardiff

Sky Bet have installed Martin O'Neill as the 6/4 favourite to become the next Cardiff City manager after Dave Jones was sacked on Monday. Cardiff decided to terminate Jones' contract after he failed to lead them into the Premier League following the club's play-off defeat to Reading. The Welsh club will now devise a shortlist of the men they believe have the potential to guide them into the Premier League, with O'Neill currently the leading candidate.

Cardiff fans watched in despair when their relatively successful league campaign - the Bluebirds finished fourth in the Championship - ultimately ended in bitter disappointment as they yet again had their promotion dreams cruelly dashed when they lost to Reading in the play-off semi-finals. After a week of intense discussions the board decided that it was time for a change and thus Jones became the latest manager to get the chop, as his six year stay at the club came to an abrupt end.

Since joining Caridiff in 2005 Jones took the club from mid-table mediocracy to promotion contenders. In 2008 Cardiff reached the FA Cup final, where they finished runners-up to Portsmouth, and then last season Jones guided them to the Championship play-offs final, where they agonisingly lost a thriller to Blackpool. This season the Bluebirds had high hopes of promotion after spending the majority of the campaign in an automatic promotion spot, only to lose out to Norwich with just a few games remaining. The play-offs beckoned once again and after a goalless draw in the first-leg at the Madejski Stadium, Cardiff were favourites to progress and reach the final. However, a shock 3-0 defeat at home in the return fixture put an end to their promotion hopes and to make matters worse their fierce rivals Swansea beat Reading in the final to become the first ever team from Wales to get promoted to the Premier League.

At the moment the bookmakers have placed the former Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill as the favourite to take over at Cardiff. However, it is unknown whether the Irishman would want to make his return to management in the Championship. Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies is next in the running with odds of 5/1, whilst Craig Bellamy, who is reportedly the fans favourite to replace Jones, is next in the running at 7/1. As for Jones he was initially the front runner in the Next West Ham Manager Betting but has since had his odds lengthened.

Sky Bet currently have Cardiff at odds of 12/1 to win the Championship next season.
