Pressure Grows on Newcastle Boss Alan Pardewby Jack Kitson / 03 January 2013, 09:48Tweet
Newcastle's torrid run continued on Wednesday night after they lost 2-1 at home to Everton. The defeat was the Toon's ninth in their last 11 Premier League matches, leaving them hovering dangerously above the relegation zone. Just two points now separats Alan Pardew's men and 18th-placed Wigan in the table and, after losing star player Demba Ba to Chelsea, they could now have a real relegation scrap on their hands.
It has been well documented that Newcastle's slump in form has occurred ever since Pardew signed a remarkable eight-year deal with the club back at the end of September. Many have questioned the length of the contract extension and some tabloid reports have revealed that Pardew would only receive a pay-off in the region of 12 months’ wages if he was to depart St James’ Park. With that in mind, at 20/1, he is definitely worth keeping an eye on in the Premier League Sack Race, especially considering that Newcastle have two massive games coming up against fellow strugglers Reading and Aston Villa.
Pardew will be hoping that Saturday's FA Cup clash away to Brighton proves to be a positive distraction from his side's woeful league form. The Magpies have been installed as the narrow 6/4 favourites in the betting with bookmakers Paddy Power, while Championship side Brighton can be backed at 7/4 to claim the win on home soil, with a draw available at 12/5.
