Freedman and Lomas favourites in Championship Sack Raceby Jack Kitson / 03 September 2013, 14:35Tweet
The new Championship season is only a handful of games old but already two managers are under severe pressure following poor starts. Bolton boss Dougie Freedman and Millwall gaffer Steve Lomas have endured disappointing campaigns to date, which has seen both managers installed as the joint 4/1 favourites in the Championship Sack Race.
Freedman's decision to trade Crystal Palace for Bolton backfired last season as Palace went on to win promotion to the Premier League, while the Trotters failed to make an instant return, despite a decent run in. After heartbreakingly finishing outside of the play-offs on goal difference they had ambitions of a top-6 finish this time around, however, they are currently rock-bottom with just two points to their name.
Freedman has already prematurely written off his side's chances of automatic promotion, which will no doubt anger the Trotters faithful. However, the truth is that they have no chance if they continue to perform how they did away to local rivals Blackburn last weekend when they were hammered 4-1.
Meanwhile Lomas is another Championship boss under-fire at the start of September. The 39-year-old was appointed the manager of Millwall in June following the departure of long-standing Lions boss Kenny Jackett. The decision caused controversy due to Lomas' connections with their fierce rivals West Ham, who he made nearly 200 appearances for as a player.
Now, after five league games, he is yet to win over the fans as he is still searching for that elusive first win, following three defeats and two draws, which has left the club 23rd in the league. Lomas simply desperately needs to unearth a win from somewhere soon otherwise he will be out the door.
Other managers to look out for in this early stage of the season include Birmingham City boss Lee Clark (7/1), Middlesbrough's Tony Mowbray (8/1) and Yeovil's Gary Johnson at 12/1.
