Craig Bellamy duels with David Unsworth for Oxford United job

Craig Bellamy may have been overlooked for the Wales job, but the passionate Welshman may not have to wait long to make his managerial bow after he burst into the betting to replace Pep Clotet at Oxford United.

Over the weekend it looked like former Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth was on the verge of bagging the U’s job, however the sudden emergence of Bellamy could change things.

Unsworth, who is the Everton U23 boss, held talks with Oxford after the Toffees gave him permission to do so. Earlier this season the 44-year-old had a brief stint in charge of the club’s senior team following the sacking of Ronald Koeman, however his chance to shine didn’t quite go to plan, with Sam Allardyce then appointed manager.

Unsworth has previously been linked with the likes of Kilmarnock and Sligo Rovers, and as of yet he hasn’t held a permanent position in the managerial arena.

It’s not known how the talks went between Unsworth and Oxford, but he now faces competition from Bellamy, well in the betting at least.

Bellamy was desperate to succeed Chris Coleman at Wales, giving what he described as a “Hollywood interview”, however in the end Ryan Giggs was handed the position.

Bellamy, 15/8 (Bet Victor), who hung up his boots back in 2018, has been working with Cardiff City’s academy, but like Unsworth he has yet to take the reins of a full-time managerial post.

Other contenders in the betting include Simon Grayson, Paul Ince and caretaker boss Derek Fazackerley, who oversaw a thrilling 3-1 victory over Charlton on Saturday as the Yellows moved within seven points of the League One play-offs.

Oxford, 10th, are next in action at home to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday.
