Five Candidates In The Mix For The Sunderland Vacancy

Jack Kitson by Jack Kitson / 05 October 2015, 10:55

Dick Adovcaat's decision to throw in the towel leaves 19th-placed Sunderland searching for their fourth manager in under two years. It's all doom and gloom around the Stadium of Light at the moment as the club bid to recover from a woeful start to the season, which has yet to produce a single victory from eight top-flight games.

The club will use the timely international break to re-coup and assess their managerial options, with a fair few managers in the mix to succeed the departed Dutchman...

Sam Allardyce

  • Odds: 6/4 with Bet365
  • Availability: Out of work
  • Age: 60
  • Former Clubs: West Ham, Blackburn, Newcastle, Bolton, Notts County, Blackpool
  • Honours: Promotion with West Ham, Bolton & Notts County, League Cup runner-up with Bolton, League of Ireland First Division winner with Limerick

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce may not admit it publicly, but he is simply gagging for a return to the managerial arena. The bookmakers favourite (6/4) parted ways with West Ham back in May, and has since been waiting patiently on the sidelines for a top-flight opportunity to arise, then two come up in one day. But, while the Liverpool job may be out of reach, the Sunderland vacancy is well within his grasp.

Sean Dyche

  • Odds: 5/1 with Sky Bet
  • Availability: Burnley boss
  • Age: 44
  • Former Clubs: Burnley 2012-, Watford Honours: Championship title with Burnley (2014)

Sean Dyche

Despite failing to keep Burnley in the top-flight last term, boss Sean Dyche's stock remains high. The "Ginger Mourinho" opted to remain with the Clarets in the summer - despite interest from Sunderland - opting instead to attempt to lead his troops back to the Promised Land at the first time of asking.

Dyche will no doubt be tempted by the Sunderland vacancy, however he's more than likely to remain loyal to Burnley, who have enjoyed a bright start to the season (6th: four points off top spot after 10 games).

Nigel Pearson

  • Odds: 7/1 with William Hill
  • Availability: Out of work
  • Age: 52
  • Former Clubs: Leicester (x2), Hull, Southampton, Carlisle United
  • Honours: Championship & League One titles with Leicester

Nigel Pearson

Like Allardyce, Nigel Pearson was bundled into the Job Centre over the summer following Leicester City's staggering decision to sack him, despite his miraculous achievements of the previous season.

Pearson kept the Foxes in the top-flight after incredibly leading the club to seven wins from their final nine games, however just six weeks later the Midlands club sent him packing, which is likely to have a lot to do with his son's sacking. Pearson is well worth pondering at 7/1, although his knack of getting in the headlines for the wrong reasons could put Sunderland off.

Brendan Rodgers

  • Odds: 12/1 with Bet365
  • Availability: Out of work
  • Age: 42
  • Former Clubs: Liverpool, Swansea, Reading, Watford
  • Honours: Promotion to the Premier League with Swansea

Brendan Rodgers

What a storyline this would be. One moment Brendan Rodgers is managing Liverpool, the next he has followed Fabio Borini up to the Stadium of Light. Rodgers' sudden availability has inevitably seen him be linked with the top-flight's only other vacancy, however it would be a huge shock if he decided to leap straight back into the managerial arena.

Instead, the Ulsterman is likely to take some time off, refuel, refresh and recharge as he would say, and then come back all the stronger for it.

David Moyes

  • Odds: 50/1 with Bet365
  • Availability: Real Sociedad manager
  • Age: 52
  • Former Clubs: Real Sociedad 2014-, Man Utd, Everton, Preston
  • Honours: Second Division title (Preston), Community Shield (2013)

David Moyes

At 50/1 David Moyes is a cracking outside bet to storm back to the Premier League with Sunderland. The Scot has come under-fire at Real Sociedad following a poor start to the season, which has seen the 16th-placed club win only one of their opening seven La Liga games.

Moyes was linked with the Black Cats in the summer but opted to stay in Spain, but should they come calling again he may have something to chew on.
