Brendan Rodgers to be rewarded with new Liverpool contractby Jack Kitson / 07 May 2014, 09:27Tweet
Liverpool boss has Brendan Rodgers will reportedly sign a whopping new four-year contract at Anfield come the end of the season. The 41-year-old Ulsterman is nearly two years into his £2.5m-a-year deal (that expires next summer, although there is an option of a one year extension) but is keen to commit his future to the club, amidst rumours that he has caught the eye of some of Europe’s top teams, including Barcelona.
Rodgers is currently bidding to lead the Reds to their first top-flight title in 24 years. A week-and-a-half ago the Merseysiders were in pole position for the coveted trophy, however a defeat to Chelsea followed by a catastrophic collapse to Crystal Palace has swung the pendulum Man City's way.
The point at Palace may have put Liverpool back on top of the pile but City are just a single point behind, with two games in hand. The Reds are now desperately relying on the Citizens to drop points at home to Aston Villa and West Ham, while they themselves must beat Newcastle.
Even if Rodgers' men are pipped to the post they can still look back on a stellar season, during which they have set the league alight with their blistering attacking play. The club have also achieved their pre-season target of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, which will make a welcome return to Anfield. Compare this to last season’s 7th place finish and it is safe to say that they have made a remarkable transition in such a short space of time.
