Steve McClaren's Derby County narrow favourites for Premier League promotionby Jack Kitson / 08 August 2014, 09:43Tweet
Fresh after signing a new three-year contract at Pride Park Derby County manager Steve McClaren will now be expected to mount another serious promotion challenge as he bids to get the East Midlands outfit back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2007/08 season. The Rams have been installed as the narrow 7/1 favourites (Paddy Power) to go on and win the 2014/15 Championship title, while they can be backed at 3/1 to get promoted.
Last September Derby sacked their long-serving boss Nigel Clough following a below-par start to the campaign. In came former England manager McClaren, who inspired a staggering turnaround in fortunes, leading his new side to a 3rd place finish and qualification for the play-offs. County thrashed Brighton 6-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals, however they missed out on promotion after suffering an agonising last-gasp defeat to QPR in the £80million Final.
But, their strong showing last season has seen the Rams emerge as the leading contenders for promotion this time around, with McClaren’s men kicking-off their campaign on Saturday at home to newly promoted Rotherham. However, Derby will face stiff competition from the relegated trio of Cardiff, Fulham and Norwich, while Wigan are also in the mix. Blackburn Rovers catch the eye at 14/1, whereas Watford can be found at 16/1.
