Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy in the running for Barnsley job

Back in November Mick McCarthy marked his fifth anniversary in charge of Ipswich Town, with the 58-year-old the longest-serving manager in the Championship, a division the Tractor Boys have been stuck in since 2002.

That’s the longest stint in the second-tier of any club currently in the division.

As is custom in management, McCarthy’s future at Ipswich has come under severe threat during various points of his tenure. None more so than at this stage last season, when he appeared to be on the cusp of losing his job at Portman Road.

In the end he clung onto the post, but with Ipswich currently stranded in 12th spot, eight points adrift of the play-offs with 16 games to go, he may decide to head home to Barnsley who were left managerless on Tuesday after Paul Heckingbottom left for Leeds.

McCarthy was born and bred in Barnsley and went on to rack up nearly 300 appearances for his home town club, helping the Tykes win two promotions up to up the Old Division Two, before moving on to Man City.

McCarthy ventured into management in the early 1990s with Millwall and has since gone on to take charge of the Republic of Ireland, Sunderland, and Wolves - leading the latter two clubs up to the Premier League - while he’s been at the helm of Ipswich since 2012.

It will be interesting to see the developments in regards to McCarthy to Barnsley - he's now priced at 4/1 from 33/1 - over the next couple of days, although judging by the reactions on social media many Ipswich Town fans are thrilled by the news! (see tweets below).

At the time of writing Lincoln boss Danny Cowley is top of the betting, with Garry Monk and caretaker boss Paul Harsley also in the frame, however it looks like Simon Grayson is now on his way to Bradford.
