Alan Irvine set to be new Sheffield Wednesday managerby Mick Bates / 08 January 2010, 11:48Tweet
Alan Irvine is set be named as the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday just ten days after getting sacked by fellow Championship club, Preston North End. The news will be a welcome relief to fans of the Owls, who have been without a manager since the dismissal of Brian Laws last month and are without a win in twelve games, stretching back to October and find themselves firmly in a relegation battle, one place of the bottom of the Championship table and four points from safety!
The arrival of Irvine must coincide with a change in fortune if Wednesday are to stay up but the at Hillsborough faithful can take heart from the fact that David Moyes' former number two at Everton had an instant impact when he took over at Deepdale, guiding Preston to safety after being bottom of the league in January.
Many have said that Alan Irvine was hard done by to be sacked so quickly at Preston following a poor run of results and say he should have been given time to turn things around, especially after finishing in the playoffs last season, just twelve months after steering the side clear of a relegation battle. However, Preston's loss may be Sheffield Wednesday's gain and despite being 11/8 (with bet365) to finish in the bottom three, it would take a brave man(or Sheffield United fan) to back Owls to go down and Wednesday fans have every reason to be confident that Irvine is the man to bring success to Hillsborough.
