Who will replace Danny Cowley at Lincoln City? Gareth Ainsworth, Michael Flynn and Phil Parkinson all linked

Lincoln City have been forced to open up the search for a new manager for the first time since May 2016, after Danny Cowley was today (Monday) eventually lured over to Championship side Huddersfield Town.

Danny, alongside his brother and assistant Nicky, enjoyed a stunning three-year spell at the helm of the Imps during which they catapulted the club from non-league to a position in the League One play-offs, lifted the EFL Trophy, and enjoyed an unforgettable run through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The duo’s departure is obviously gutting given the catalogue of memories they conjured up over the last few years, but the club will be determined to continue the journey they started, and that begins with the appointment of a new manager.

Who are the early contenders?

Gareth Ainsworth, the man who beat Cowley on Saturday in his final game in charge, has been installed as one of the early favourites in the next Lincoln manager market.

The 46-year-old, who has been in charge of Wycombe since 2012, is currently the second-longest serving manager in the top-four tiers of English football behind Jim Bentley (Morecambe).

Ainsworth has strong ties to Lincoln with whom he made just short of 100 appearances for between 1995 and 1997, during which he was twice voted the club’s Player of the Season.

Ainsworth remains a popular figure at Sincil Bank and no doubt has the reputation, experience and confidence to replace the Cowley brothers, however the club would have to shell out money in compensation.

Plus, who’s to say he’d even want the job, with Wycombe currently flying high at the summit of League One - their highest league position in their 132-year history - with Ainsworth’s men delighting their fans through the employment of an attractive brand of football.

Due to his continued success with Newport Town, Michael Flynn is often linked with a newly opened managerial vacancy.

Over the last couple of years he's blossomed into one of the most highly-rated managers in League Two after taking the club from relegation strugglers to promotion contenders, and will now no doubt hold ambitions of jumping up the managerial ladder into League One, with the Daily Mail reporting that he’s Lincoln’s first choice.

It’s no surprise to see Phil Parkinson linked. Since leaving Bolton three weeks ago he’s featured in both the next Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday manager markets, and is currently the favourite for the newly opened Southend job.

Ex-Southamption boss Nigel Adkins also features in the betting, as does Jamie McCombe who has been placed in caretaker charge of the Imps - alongside Andy Warrington - while the club searches for Cowley’s replacement. Sol Campbell and Tim Flowers can both be backed at 20/1, while Michael Appleton is out at 25/1.
