Martin O'Neill assumed the Republic of Ireland role after the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni following a defeat by Austria which ended their hopes of qualification for the 2014 World Cup.

O'Neill immediately got the Republic back to winning ways with a decisive 3-0 victory in his first game in charge against Latvia.

A successful Euro 2016 qualifying campaign followed, leading to a strong showing in the Euro 2016 tournament where the Republic of Ireland were eventually ousted after a narrow defeat to the hosts, France, in the knockout stages.
